FAQs
My young adult needs undergarment support for their growing body. What do you suggest?
At Lola Olivia, we try our best to embrace the chaos of puberty by providing gender fluid options for all our growing tweens and teens. We have a few options for your kiddo!
Our Zoey Bralette was our very first design. Proportionally designed for a young person (and not a bow in sight!) - our bralettes are simple, subtle, and effective. Made with a soft double layer of 100% cotton, smooth elastic, and adjustable straps, the Zoey Bralette also has removable A cup pads for modest enhancement and nipple coverage. Our Zoey Bralette is the perfect first bra!
Our Apollo Binder is our first design using compression in the chest. Our unique triple layer design with meaningful details - such as lowered armholes and necklines - works great for those who desire to compress the chest, but our binder will not harm the ribcage. This is especially important with our youth and their growing bodies!
How does the LO Binder work?
Our Apollo Binder is a wonderful piece specifically designed for the tween or teen entering puberty who wants to safely compress their chest. The front piece has three layers - a spandex outer layer, an organic cotton twill middle layer, and a power mesh lining. The power mesh is very soft to the skin, while the twill provides a great compression that is not painful or too constricting. The spandex outer layer is smooth and sleek, keeping the binder very flat and subtle underneath their clothing. The double layer spandex back panel makes the binder easy to take on and off.
How does the LO Binder fit?
Our binder is customized for a young adult - with details like a scooped neck in the front and back, and lowered armholes, these features allow our binders to be worn under loose short-sleeve shirts even tank tops and are barely noticeable. The binder should fit against the skin in a taut but not constricting manner. The hemline should lay smoothly against the ribcage. The double spandex layer in the back makes it easy to take on and off; and the shape and fit is well maintained. There is minimal top stitching which does not show through to one’s clothing. Our pieces are discreet, comfortable, and effective.
What if I just want a light compression or light coverage, and don’t want or need a full bra or binder?
We love that for you! Minimal coverage works for any body type. I suggest the Athena Bandeau, which is similar to a tube top. Made with a double layer of spandex for the front and back, with a thin middle layer of neoprene in the front panel. The beauty of the neoprene is that it offers a light compression but is not as major as wearing a chest binder. Lightweight and soft, the bandeau is the perfect way to achieve nipple coverage without wearing something that looks and feels like a bra or compression garment.
What Lola Olivia product will help with nipple coverage?
All our products will provide nipple coverage. The Athena Bandeau top has a middle front layer of neoprene that provides coverage. The Apollo, Lucien, and Mesh Binders have three layers of compression in the front. And our Zoey Bralette has a modest removable A cup pad.
My child has sensory sensitivities. Will Lola Olivia products work for my child?
Yes!! Our top notch fabrics - bought in NYC from local businesses - have a cooling effect. A lot of our young customers have sensory sensitivities, and they love our Binders. The mesh lining is very soft and has a great memory. Our interior label is infused on, so we don’t have any itchy labels to worry about! At Lola Olivia, our garments are smooth, subtle and well received by all.
What is a good first bra for a 12 year old?
Our Zoey Bralette! Made with a soft double layer of 100% cotton with smooth elastic, adjustable straps and removable A cup pads. No wires, no fuss, no bows, and it looks like something they would actually want to wear.
Sizing
How do I know what size to buy for my young adult?
Follow our size guide to find your perfect size. Make sure you are thorough when measuring. If you feel that you are in between sizes, for our binders we suggest going towards the larger size and for the bra and bandeau, we suggest going down a size. Please reach out to me if you have sizing questions! I LOVE questions!!
How do I measure for a Binder?
Two measurements: around the fullest part of the chest, and across the back from shoulder to shoulder. Our size charts page walks you through both step by step, with pictures, plus a trick for measuring with a shoelace if you do not have a tape measure. If the two numbers land in different sizes, choose the larger one.
What ages and sizes do you make?
Lola Olivia was created for tweens and teens, but our sizes run from 3XS to 4XL, so plenty of grown ups wear us too. Everything is cut for a young body first: scooped necklines, lowered armholes and hems that sit above the belly button, but overall, our comfort and our target audience is anyone and everyone.
Wearing a binder
Is it safe for a teen to wear a chest binder?
Yes, when it fits right and is worn right, my loves. Our binder was built for growing bodies: the three layer front compresses the chest without hugging the rib cage, so the wearer can breathe comfortably.
A few house rules: always measure and order your true size (never size down for extra compression), take it off to sleep, give your body breaks on long days, and never wear two at once. If anything ever hurts, stop and reach out to us.
And if you have questions about your own health, please talk to your doctor.
How long can you wear a binder in a day?
Comfort first, always. We recommend keeping it to about 8 hours a day, taking it off for sleep, sports and anything that leaves you out of breath, and listening to your body. If it pinches, aches, or makes breathing harder, it is either the wrong size or it has been on too long. Please take it off! And email me; let’s discuss.
What is the difference between a binder and a sports bra?
A sports bra holds the chest in place; a binder flattens it. Our binders use a three layer front panel for real compression while a sports bra usually has one stretchy layer. If your young adult wants a flat look, go with the binder. If they want light coverage without a bra feel, the Athena Bandeau sits right in between. We also have our Phoenix Sports Binder, which allows some compression and chest containment when playing sports or swimming.
How do I wash my binder, bra or bandeau?
Machine wash cold on delicate. Fluff to warm dry, then lay flat. Do not dry clean and do not iron. Treat it kindly and it will last.
